The present study is part of the project Economic Hardship, Parenting Role, and Child Behavior Problems carried out at the Human Development Research Center. Its purpose is to analyze the relation between parents' financial anxiety and externalizing behaviors of their adolescent children, aged between 10 and 18 years, while also investigating the potential mediating effect of parents' psychological symptoms (anxiety and depression) and parental alliance. Five questionnaires were used: a sociodemographic questionnaire, the Financial Anxiety Scale, the Children Behavior Checklist, the Brief Symptom Inventory, and the Parental Alliance Inventory. Data collection, conducted online via the Qualtrics platform, involved the participation of 75 Portuguese fathers. Data analysis was performed using the IBM SPSS Statistics, version 28. The results indicated significant and positive associations among financial anxiety, depression, anxiety, and children’s externalizing behaviors, while parental alliance showed a significant negative association with the other variables. In the mediation models, a total mediation effect of depression, anxiety, and parental alliance was found in the relation between financial anxiety and externalization.
