This study aimed to contribute to the description of the consumption of psychoactive substances and its possible role as a coping strategy in musicians with Musical Performance Anxiety in Portugal, with university music students. A sociodemographic questionnaire and two instruments Kenny Music Performance Anxiety Inventory (K-MPAI) and Alcohol, Smoking and Substance Involvement Screening Test (ASSIST) were used in a sample of 104 participants, with a mean age of 23.8 years. The results identified a low risk of consumption of most psychoactive substances and a moderate level of risk for alcohol and tobacco, as well as a significant correlation between the consumption of psychoactive substances and anxiety in musical performance, namely in the consumption of anxiolytics and beta-blockers and in the consumption of illicit substances, although the risk levels for each substance were low. The comparison regarding the gender of the participants revealed that there are no differences in terms of consumption, but there are differences in terms of musical performance anxiety. The reinforcement of psychoeducation as a prevention strategy for musical performance anxiety and more adaptive coping strategies and subsequent monitoring of students becomes important in the university setting of music.
