The COVID-19 pandemic led, in March 2020, to the declaration of a national emergency state and to the first confinement. In the context of higher education, students moved from face-to-face to online education and were faced with a sudden change in their routines, having face-to-face contact with their support network being put on standby, to the detriment of individual and collective health. The present study aimed to explore the social and academic impact of the first period of suspension of classroom activities (March-July 2020), on a group of Portuguese higher education students, understanding this way the role of MCE in this impact. The sample included 247 young people with an average of 21.9 years. For data collection (July 2020) the questionnaire “COVID-19: Social, Academic and Psychological Impact of the Pandemic on University Students” was developed. The results point to the positive role of MCE in the readaptation of social and academic contexts, enabling distance contact with the support network and the progression of the school year. The space for oneself; a proper space to study and not sharing it; and the quality of internet connection contributed to a less negative experience perceived by young people.
