Abstract

The Master Degree Course in Nursing and in the more specific area of Medical - Surgical Nursing held at the Portuguese Catholic University situated in Viseu, the Beiras Regional Center, seeks to develop technical, scientific as well as practical skills with a view to provide not only general care but also targeting more specialized skills relating to the specific area of Nursing chosen which in this case relates to patients in critical condition. The duration of the course was three semesters which included theory and practical (in a clinical environment) and the compilation of each respective report. The practical experience obtained in a clinical environment corresponds to a total of 750 hours (30 ECTS) being: 540 hours of active contact with patients and medical staff; and 210 hours of individual work. This took place at Hospital São Teotónio – Viseu, and was divided into three modules: - Module I: Emergency Service, which took place at the General Emergency Service Center from the 24/04/2010 to the 26/06/2010; - Module II: Intensive/Intermediate Care, which took place at the Polyvalent Intensive Care Unit from the 04/10/2010 to the 30/01/2011; - Module III: Optional, took place at the Nephrology/Dialysis Unit from 03/01/2011 to 28/01/2011; under the guidance of Professor Teresa Borges as well as the tutoring of specialized nurses in the various locations. These internships facilitated the consolidation of theoretical knowledge stimulating the “how to be” and “how to do” and contributing to a personal and professional growth. In addition scientific and technical skills were obtained as a direct result of the special care administered to existing and emerging patients in critical state requiring emergency treatment as well as patients with renal related medical problems in the various phases of illness. On the other hand it was extremely enriching due to the set of various skills obtained namely relational skills concerning the communication and therapeutic relationship, which is naturally established with the patients and their families. This report will describe and reflect the various stages of learning both theoretical and practical as described briefly above, where the primary objective lies in obtaining the necessary skills required as a specialized nurse.
