Abstract

The Nursing profession is constantly updated due to health care needs whose responses are constructer using research and scientific evidence, which is essential for the provision of care. The acquisition of specialized technical-scientific skills to provide the best care to the population's demands becomes urgent. Being a nurse is much more than knowing how to do it. To be an excellent professional you need to know how to be, know how to know and know how to do. The nursing paradigm has undergone several changes and therefore, investment in specialized training is essential to provide the best care, based on the most up-to-date scientific evidence. This internship report is part of the Master's Course in Medical-Surgical Nursing in the area of Nursing for People in Critical Situations at the Universidade Católica Portuguesa. It will demonstrate in a critical and reflective way the path of acquisition and development of Specialist Nurse skills in Medical-Surgical Nursing in the area of Nursing for People in Critical Situations, resulting from advances made in the context of the Intensive Care Unit and General Emergency Service. Throughout the report, a theme is developed, namely the application of the NEWS2 Scale, which became fundamental to outline my internship objectives and develop the skills of a master and specialist. A scoping review was carried out, mapping the most recent scientific evidence, evaluating the extent and nature of the literature on the advantages of applying the NEWS2 scale to acute patients, in an inpatient context. The importance of the nurse's assessment of a critically ill patient or one whose clinical condition is about to deteriorate is highlighted, as well as the importance of applying the scale to standardize language and correctly and quickly signal the critically ill patient to different environments, in a hospital context.
