Abstract

Introduction: The stomatognathic system is composed by several important elements for its balance, including the temporomandibular joint (TMJ). Some parafunctions may affect TMJ, muscles and/or teeth, which can cause temporomandibular disorders (TMD), a pathology with multifactorial aetiology. Research Diagnostic Criteria for Temporomandibular Disorders appear to facilitate the diagnosis and understanding of TMD. Objectives: From the RDC/TMD, it was intended to generate hypothesis regarding to early DTM detection according with the characteristics of ICS-UCP student community and population of the Viseu region, who attends at the clinic university. Materials and Methods: The sample comprised 72 individuals - patients and students of the ICS-UCP clinic university. All patients were requested to read the informed consent, free and clear data collected confidentiality was guaranteed. Randomly, it was evaluated their occlusal condition for the RDC/TMD application and recorded the most likely diagnosis. For statistical analysis, the Microsoft® Excel® for Mac 2011 and IBM® SPSS v.22 were used. Results: The quantitative values of all variables (opening motion, lateral motion, protrusion, overbite and overjet) were found to be within the expected literature data. Moreover, the most prevalent diagnostics discovered were arthralgia and disk displacement with reduction, and the female gender was related the most to the presence of pain. Globally, all of the TMD signs and symptoms correlated show to be similar with other studies. Conclusion: Considering the limitations and characteristics of the sample, the conclusions made are comparable to the current knowledge. It is important more studies to increase improvement of this method and to allow a better treatment, more objective, precise and individualized.
