Abstract

Introduction: Conscious sedation by inhalation of nitrous oxide is recognized for
its efficacy in patients with high levels of anxiety about dental treatments. It is the Dentists' responsibility to ensure both quality and safety in conscious sedation. The objective of this study was to systematize the scientific evidence on the acquisition of skills for the practice of conscious sedation by inhalation with nitrous oxide by the dentist. Material and methods: Systematic review conducted using the PRISMA methodology, according to the PICO criteria, for the research question. The search was carried out in MEDLINE (PubMed®), Web of Science® and Scopus databases, with a Grey Literature supplement of studies/articles published in the last 20 years, according to the defined inclusion criteria. Agreement between researchers was assessed using Cohen's kappa coefficient and the quality of studies using Downs and Black's checklist. Results: From the 620 records obtained by searching the search engines, 7 articles were selected. The results obtained show that conscious sedation by inhalation of nitrous oxide should be carried out with the proper safety conditions and by accredited dentists and always assisted by another dentist or dental assistant who has received adequate training, is adequately trained in theoretical,
practical and clinical terms, and is competent to deal with any complication.
Provided these requirements are met, there is no contraindication to
administration in a dental practice setting. Most of the evidence refers to the
Guidelines of the Council of European Dentists and the American Academy of
Pediatric Dentistry. Conclusion: In view of the evidence found, we believe that accredited training institutions should include in their curricula lectures, seminars on conscious sedation by inhalation of nitrous oxide of at least 10 hours, and the practical application of the sedation technique. It is of great importance that students are certified at the end of the entire program (theory, examination, practical skills, and clinical skills) and that they understand the need to maintain and develop the skills through regular use and to update themselves through continuing education courses.
