This report intends to describe the process of learning and development of skills as a future nurse specialist in Medical-Surgical Nursing, during the internships performed within the curricular unit "Final Internship and Report", integrated on Nursing Master's with Specialization in Medical-Surgical Nursing, from Universidade Católica Portuguesa (Porto). These occurred in an Intensive Care Unit and a Multipurpose Intermediate Care Unit. Based on a descriptive methodology and critical-reflexive analysis, supported by bibliographic research, a description of the activities developed throughout the internships is made according to the domains of the common competencies of specialist nurse. These activities allowed the fulfillment of the objectives defined for this curricular unit, leading to the development of skills in the scope of Medical-Surgical Nursing. Through the mobilization of specific and diversified knowledge, and in possession of an integrative view of health, based on ethical, scientific and human values, it is expected that the nurse specialized in Medical-Surgical Nursing will be able to approach complex issues in a systematic way, taking reasoned decisions and demonstrating critical awareness of the problems of professional practice. Given the growing appreciation of quality and excellence of care, intervention projects were carried regarding provision of eye care to critically ill patients and identification of allergies, as a measure that promotes safe practices. This enabled development of skills in the area of risk management, the promotion of a safe and quality environment for care provision. Considering the relevance and topicality of eye care theme, the intervention project also led to the creation of a service protocol and a scientific article, enhancing the acquisition of skills related to incorporation of research results into practice and promotion of personal and professional development of peers. In order to contribute to the recognition of the nursing profession, it is essential to highlight its value, demonstrating to the population that the gains obtained through nursing care are a constant concern of nurses, who continuously seek to improve the quality of care provided in any context and the critical patient is no exception. The provision of care to critically ill patients, although much based on technique, require a deep reflection on the ethical-deontological issues inherent in this area of care, considering the vulnerability of the person in a critical situation and the need to act in favor of his oneness and dignity. Far beyond the technical-scientific skills that the Master of Nursing provides in the area of specialization concerned, it also encourages research and the relevance of its practical incorporation, promoting the adoption of evidence-based practice as a driving force for the development of Nursing as a profession and body of knowledge.
