Abstract

The literature presents a range of research that defines the characteristics of work as being crucial for the physical and psychological wellbeing of employees. Work valences define the positive and negative dimensions of each individual's work experiences. The objective of this investigation was to understand how the perception of autonomy, perception of demands and support from the supervisor at work are related to work valences, both positive and negative, and to understand how work valences, both positive and negative, relate to engagement. This is a quantitative study, using a crosssectional design and nonprobability sampling. The sample consisted of 384 Portuguese individuals over the age of 18 and employed, to whom a sociodemographic questionnaire was administered in order to collect data regarding sociodemographic variables and the respective instruments to measure the constructs of demands, autonomy and support from the supervisor, engagement and positive and negative work valences. The results indicated that the higher the perception of autonomy and support from the supervisor, the more positive work valences. On the other hand, the higher the perception of autonomy and support from management, the fewer negative work valences. It was possible to determine that there is a positive relationship between work demands and negative valences, as well as a negative relationship between autonomy and support from management with negative valences. Finally, positive work valences are positively related to engagement.
