Abstract

Introduction: Intensive Care was developed to treat patients who have acute injuries or illnesses, with one of the objectives being the maintenance of vital signs. Today, it deals with patients with chronic, limiting and life-threatening illnesses where curative goals are not always possible to be successfully achieved. Palliative Care is a therapeutic approach, carried out by a multidisciplinary team in which the physiotherapist is inserted, with the objective of promoting quality of life, relieving and preventing suffering of patients with life-threatening illnesses. Materials and Methods: This qualitative, exploratory and descriptive study will be carried out through a questionnaire that will be made available to Physiotherapists, recruited by snowball, who work in Intensive Care in Portugal and Brazil. Limitations: Access to individuals who will compose the study sample, the time they will use to o answer the questionnaire and the cultural difference of the individuals studied and their professional activity in each country may be limitations to the interpretation of the study. Purpose: Describe the physiotherapist's skills in identifying the palliative needs of patients hospitalized in IC, compare the skills performed by Brazilian and Portuguese physiotherapists and compare the difficulties that the physiotherapist, Brazilian or Portuguese, feels in exercising his skills to the patient with palliative needs, admitted to intensive care. Expected Implications: It is expected to stimulate further research and discussion on the integration of the theme in the training of undergraduate/licentiate students, and professionals already working in intensive care.
