This report is part of the Master's course in Medical-Surgical Nursing with an area ofspecialization in Nursing to the Person in Critical Situation, proposed with the objective ofevaluating the process of acquisition and development of specialized competencies innursing by reflecting on the scientific, technical, ethical and relational responsibility of thenurse specialized in professional practice of excellence. The present work adopts adescriptive/expositive methodology through the description, analysis and reflection aboutthe experiences and activities developed in the final stage that allowed the acquisition ofcompetencies in the area of specialization.The final stage took place in two clinical contexts that, although distinct, complementedthemselves as suitable areas for the development of specialty skills: a General EmergencyService of a hospital on the outskirts of Lisbon; and an Intensive Care Unit of CardiothoracicSurgery of a hospital unit integrated in a hospital center in Lisbon. The specific objectivesthat guided the internship experiences were to develop competencies in specialized care tothe person in critical situation in each of the contexts and contribute to the promotion of the quality of sleep of the person in critical situation. This report also includes a Systematic Literature Review of evidence of meaning conducted on a theme of cross-sectional interest to internship and matter projects sensitive to nursing intervention: “the meaning of the sleep experience from the perspective of the critically located person and nurses”. This investigation bases the choice of the theme about the promotion of sleep quality as specialized nursing care developed in this course.
