Abstract
In an increasingly aging society, particularly in countries considered developed and developing, including Portugal, emerging challenges related to this theme are evident. These challenges encompass the sustainability of social protection systems and healthcare systems, the labor market, and social responses. According to PORDATA (2022), it is evident that Portugal is getting older. In the year 1960, there were 708,569 people aged 65 or older, whereas in the year 2021, this number increased to 2,424,122 people aged 65 or older. However, the crude birth rate decreased from 24.1% in 1960 to around 7.7% in 2021, leading to a demographic inversion. In this context, it is crucial that social responses enable people to live longer with greater autonomy and prioritize remaining in the environment where they have always lived and to which they belong. Raising awareness about lifestyle changes that promote a longer and healthier life is important, fostering active aging. Therefore, this study focused on the middle-aged population, aged between 40 and 60, as they will be the next generation of individuals reaching old age. Traditionally, interventions have been welfare-based, which at times can even foster dependency. Thus, a paradigm shift is necessary to value the elderly population and encourage their prolonged contribution to the community. Consequently, responses should emphasize the individual's private sphere and consider "Ageing in Place" to promote social inclusion. There should also be more personalized and individualized support from local entities to guide this support toward prevention, preparing for retirement in a way that maximizes the benefits of this life stage.| Date of Award | 29 Feb 2024 |
