Abstract

In the last decades, research of the use of information technology in an educational context has expanded in a very significant way. Several studies have revealed the potential of this technology in the teaching-learning process. This study aims to stress the importance of reading and writing and to intervene in the promotion and development of these essential competences for all citizens. The study accentuates the importance of the school’s role that, in accordance with the principles that guide the educational action and the fundamental role of the teachers, contributes to the learning, development and promotion of reading and writing, these being the most important qualities for the student’s success. This qualitative study was accomplished during a school year, with a class of 17 children of the 3rd academic year, in a private school of the Lisbon District. It involved reading and writing activities, mostly using a word processor and other software. Data collection came from three different sources – direct observation, interviews of the students and questionnaires for the students and parents. In light of the results, it was concluded that digital technology brings high levels of motivation and persistence from the students. It was possible to verify that the Magalhães computer, the tablet and the data show, stimulated the students curiosity and will to learn, making them more concentrated, participative and interested in accomplishing the reading and writing activities. The use of information technology can shape the way students learn how to read and write, by increasing their motivation to work, contributing towards the development of their communication abilities and to enhance their human dimension. It is intended that this study should encourage a reflection of this theme, helping make possible changes in teaching practices that aim to promote reading and writing at the 1st Ciclo level.
