Job satisfaction, as well as overall life satisfaction, has been the subject of investigation, with literature exploring this relationship. However, to date, no studies have delved into the relationship of these variables with work valences. Thus, the present research aimed to understand how both positive and negative work valences relate to job satisfaction and, in turn, how job satisfaction relates to overall life satisfaction in employees working for private companies. This was an exploratory, quantitative, cross-sectional study involving 246 individuals, predominantly Portuguese and aged over 18 years. Data collection was conducted through a sociodemographic questionnaire and the following scales: the Work Valence Scale (WVS), the Brief Index of Affective Job Satisfaction, and the Satisfaction with Life Scale. The results suggest that the more positive work valences individuals have, the more satisfied they are with their job, while conversely, the more negative work valences they have, the less satisfied they are with their job. The same applies to overall life satisfaction; positive valences appear to contribute to increased overall life satisfaction, while negative valences contribute to decreased overall life satisfaction. Regarding the relationship between job satisfaction and overall life satisfaction, when analysing the direct relationship between these variables, a positive and significant relationship was found. However, when the relationship between these variables is analysed in a more complex model incorporating positive valences, there is no longer a relationship between job satisfaction and overall life satisfaction. Conversely, when negative valences are included, the relationship between job satisfaction and overall life satisfaction is positive and significant.
