Negation, as a category of language, is a universal property of the world's languages, regardless of their modality. The realization of negation in individual sign languages, as well as the typological variation among sign languages have been the object of study in several investigations, under diversified descriptive and theoretical perspectives. In this study, we analyse the phrasal negation in Portuguese Sign Language, based on a corpus constituted under the Avatar Project (PTDC/LLT-LIN/29887/2017) - LGP Reference Corpus and modelling of an AVATAR for LGP/Portuguese machine translation, aiming to study phrasal negation through negative signs, simultaneously or sequentially with the signs with which they form the negative construction, accompanied or not by Non-Manual Markers. Twenty-three phonomorphological categories of negation were detected, negation being understood as the operation that allows denoting the non-existence of the situation/entity originally reported by that situation/unit. More particularly, a morphosyntactic and syntactic-semantic-based categorization of the sign NÃO_HAVER was carried out, corresponding to the expression of negation with Hand/Hand configuration in "O" (nº 12), in the productions of the subcategories A1, A2 and A4. During data analysis, different uses for the negative sign NÃO_HAVER were considered: i) verb with sense of inexistence- not to exist; ii) verb with sense of inexistence- not to be; iii) verb with sense of negative possession- not to possess/have; iv) with sense of locative inexistence- not to be; v) negative particle combined with another sign interpreted as Verb.
