The aim of this study is to understand the experience of environmental activism in Portugal from the activists' point of view, specifically in terms of their motivations, facilitators, obstacles and impact of activism. Using a qualitative approach, a semi-structured interview was conducted with an environmental activist who is the head of a local Environmental Non-Governmental Organization. The results led to the conclusion that, although environmental activism is being increasingly facilitated, as the literature indicates, by the growing participation of the community in activist actions and the support of local authorities, the lack of organization between the several national environmental associations and the antagonism on the part of government bodies emerge as the most prominent obstacles. The importance of contact with nature as a promoter of environmental awareness and, consequently, as a motivator for involvement in environmental activism is highlighted.
