This report is organized around the topic of Supervision and the teacher’s performance assessment. We’ve experienced this in two different ways: on the one hand our performance was assessed, on the other hand, we’ve had an active role in organizing the teacher’s performance assessment process in our school. We’ve analyzed some moments of our professional career, since 1997 up until the current school year. During that time, two moments stand out because of the relevance they had in terms of professional development. The first one was the experience as a trainee teacher at Jaime Cortesão Secondary School, in Coimbra, from 1997 to 1998, and the second one the participation in the evaluation of teacher performance during the previous school year. We want to understand Supervision in the complex reality where it occurs: the school as an Organization, either public or private, with a religious character or not. We focus on the professional identity of teachers and the challenges that they face nowadays, namely the quick changes in the society and the numerous functions attributed to the teachers. Finally, it is also our aim to briefly describe some key ideas about the teacher’s performance assessment in Private Schools regulated by the Collective Employment Contract, as well as its application in a school where we were co-responsible for the assessment of teachers, in the last school year. This report allowed a reflection over our own experience and reinforced our conviction that assessment is part of a lifelong learning process and improves professional development.
