Introduction – The increase in life expectancy has lead to a rise in the elderly population, which consequently entails an increase of the edentulous population. Oral rehabilitation with removable prosthesis often arises as a last resource by the ease of its implementation, due to economic and manufacture factors. However, mechanical and biological complications may arise after the placement of the removable dental prosthesis, which must be considered and dealt with properly. Purpose – Assess the frequency of mechanical and biological complications associated with partial or full removable rehabilitation; evaluation of patient satisfaction; assessment of the relationship between check-up appointments and prosthetic complications. Materials and Methods – Patients that received removable dental prosthesis executed in the University Clinic of the Portuguese Catholic University, between 2010 and 2012, were recalled for a follow-up appointment. In a clinical record prepared for these visits, data about the prosthetic history, prosthesis condition, patient's opinion and existing prosthetic complications were recorded. Statistical analysis was performed using the chi-square, Mann Whitney U and Kruskal Wallis tests (p<0.05). Results - Of the 182 patients contacted by telephone, 75 joined the follow-up appointment requested, with a mean-age of 59,19 years (+-10,81). All patients underwent follow-up visits [mean: 5,03 (+-3,28)], with no difference in gender, but with a predominance of controls in patients over 60 years. The most frequent partial edentulous type was Kennedy Class I. The loss of retention was the most frequent complication (36,0%-38,7%), followed by stomatitis (17,3% in the upper jaw) and inflammation or ulceration (16,0% in the lower jaw). No association was found between prosthetic complications, edentulous class and type of rehabilitation for both jaws (p<0.05). Patients with history of prior rehabilitation showed greater satisfaction with phonetics. No association was found between complications and the number of follow-up appointments. Conclusion – Given the frequency of complications as well as prosthesis condition in terms of hygiene, it is essential that the patients meets the follow-up appointments plan established after the placement of the removable dental prosthesis.
