The wound closure is the last step of the surgical protocol for simple extractions. For this, the dentist should choose whichever medical case history and medical history, the suture material that best applies. The type of suture material is one of the critical factors that influence the occurrence of post-surgery infection. The materials most commonly used in dentistry are silk, nylon and polyglycolic acid. The aim of this randomized study is to compare two distinct materials of suture and its respective implications in the evaluation of postoperative complications in the verbal consultation of Oral Surgery of the University Clinic of the University Portuguese Catholic – Viseu. The studied included patients without systemic diseases with indication for extraction that were divided in two groups, the group sutured with polyamide and the group sutured with silk, between January and May of 2014. Data were collected through a questionnaire, consented by the patient, which was fully informed of the purpose of this study. All information collected, as well as statistical findings of this project were relevant to Dentists in the choice of suture material in each clinical case. The results revealed no statistically significant differences between the groups, so we accepted the hypothesis (H3), so we can say that silk and polyamide have similar clinical characteristics.
