Abstract

Dry socket is one of the most common post-operative complications deriving from dentalextraction. This pathology is derived from the disruption of the normal post-extraction healing, which will compromise the normal remodeling and post-extaction bone healing. Although theetiology of this disease is not yet well understood, it is reported that dry socket is the resultfrom disintegration of the blood clot by fibrinolysis mechanisms. There are several definitionsproposed for dry socket, however, many authors emphasize the definition presented by Blum(2002), which states that dry socket could be defined as postoperative pain in and around thesocket that increases in intensity between the first and third day after tooth extraction, existingpartial or total loss of the blood clot in the socket, presenting or not halitosis. The aim of this study is to evaluate the incidence of dry socket in the control of postextractionscomplications resulting from dental extraction performed in Oral Surgeryappointments at the Dental University Clinic of the Catholic University of Portugal – Viseu, aswell as the factors associated with its occurrence.During the time of data collection for this study, 134 extractions were included, performedin 87 patients and 3 cases of dry socket were diagnosed, corresponding to an incidence of 2,24%. These results are comparable to the results of previous studies reported in the literature. It wasn’t possible to accept or reject any of the hypothesis made and therefore it would benecessary to make a longer study with a bigger sample which allows a better risk factors study inherent to dry socket.
