Abstract

This report pretends to highlight the practical work developed in the context of internship, performed under the Master's Degree with specialization in Medical-Surgical Nursing at the Institute of Health Sciences at the Catholic University of Portugal. It is the practical side of an academic and scientific path, conducted between April 22, 2013 and January 31, 2014 at a Hospital in Loures. This work presents and compiles a description, reflection and analysis of the activities developed throughout this training period, which is composed of three distinct modules performed in the same hospital. In module I, performed in the Emergency Department, it was essentially possible to develop skills in the provision of specialized care to patients of medium and high risk, in the context of emergency/urgency care, as well as activities aimed to improve care, through the improvement of nursing professionals awareness of the importance of pain assessment. In Module II, was possible to develop skills in the care of the patient / family in critical condition in Intensive Care Unit/Intermediate Care Unit, improving the quality of care through the implementation and application of pain assessment scales to non-communicating, sedated and ventilated patients, proceeding later, to the analysis of its records by nursing professionals. Module III presents an optional module of training that also took place at ODH. The focus continued on the quality of care provided to the client/family, associated with the work of demystifying beliefs and myths about the use of opioids, as well as the holding of a specific training course about cancer pain and the use of opioids for cancer pain control. Therefore, through continuous reflection of the lived experiences and activities developed, and the implementation of standardized pain assessment methods, a diagnosis and nursing commitment in patient/family satisfaction was elaborated, as well as a series of contributions that sought to frame the role of the specialist nurse in promoting and protecting the quality of care provided to the client / family.
