Abstract

Introduction: The Twinky Star® compomer by VOCO® has been widely used in
pediatric dentistry due to its effectiveness in restoring deciduous teeth. The
evaluation of the surface roughness of this composite is important to ensure the
quality and durability of restorations in pediatric patients. Objectives: The objective of this thesis is to determine the surface roughness of each of the 8 colors in the Twinky Star® kit by VOCO®, subjected to different polishing methods. Materials and methods: For this study, 56 capsules of each color of 0.25 g of Twinky Star® by VOCO® (7 x 8) were used. The samples were divided into 3 polishing groups: group A - circular polishing (3 x 8); group B - linear polishing (3 x 8); group C - no polishing (1 x 8). Surface roughness was evaluated using a profilometer, and statistical analysis was performed with a significance level of 0.05. Results: For the analysis of surface roughness, a factorial ANOVA model considering the variables of color, polishing methods, and the interaction between color and polishing methods could not be performed. Statistical analysis was carried out based on the polishing methods alone. Group A exhibited lower average roughness values compared to the other groups. Group B showed higher average roughness values than Group A but lower values compared to Group C. Group C had the highest average roughness values. Regarding color, within Group A, the Blue, Berry, and Green colors had lower average roughness values, while the Lemon color had the highest average roughness value. In Group B, the Lemon color had the lowest average roughness values, while the Silver color had the highest average roughness values. In Group C, the Orange color had the lowest average roughness values, while the Green color had the highest average roughness values. Conclusion: The choice of color for the Twinky Star® compomer used in a pediatric restoration is not as crucial as the way it is polished.
