Introduction: Crown preparations are destructive to underlying tooth tissue and can affect the pulp vitality. Several factors are associated with the trauma by tooth preparation including the increased of temperature due to frictional heat which can cause dental hypersensitivity to pulpal necrosis. There is a critical value set intrapulpal temperature of 42,5˚C, from which damages will be irreversible. Objectives: By using a pilot study, we expect a clarification as to the influence of usury in the temperature variation of the tooth surface friction detected during preparation for crowns. Materials and Methods: During the execution of dental preparation for full crowns in fixed prosthodontic were performed measures of high level temperatures observed in dental surface by PCE-889 thermometer. Three groups of burs with different degrees of usury were selected. Statistical analysis of the data was performed using SPSS® (IBM Corp. Released 2011. IBM SPSS Statistics for Windows, Version 20.0. Armonk, NY: IBM Corp.). Anova One-Way was also used, the normality of distribution was assessed with the Shapiro-Wilk test and the homogeneity of variances with the Levene test. It was considered a significance level of ≤ 0,05. Results: There were significant differences in the friction temperature of the three types of burs only when it was determined 2 minutes after, p <0.05. The maximum temperatures of which group of burs were: new, 32,35˚C (5min); light wear, 34,25˚C (2min); widely wear, 32,77˚C(2min). Conclusion: During this pilot study was detected values of friction temperatures which can cause pulpal damages. In function of results, the sample size ideal for future study is 137 elements
