Abstract: The increase in average life expectancy has resulted in a growing number of elderly people in Portugal, highlighting the importance of studying this age group. Clinical dry mouth (xerostomia) is a prevalent condition during the aging process, which can directly affect the quality of life of this population as well as their daily activities. Therefore, its underdiagnosis becomes essential. The main objective of this study is to evaluate clinical dry mouth (xerostomia) and its relationship with the quality of life in elderly residents of nursing homes. Materials and Methods: A pilot cross-sectional observational study was conducted with elderly residents in nursing homes, in collaboration with FMD-UCP. The study involved the distribution of informational brochures, obtaining informed consent, administering questionnaires, and conducting intraoral examinations based on the Challacombe Scale. The data obtained were statistically analyzed using the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) software. Results: A sample of 70 individuals was obtained, mostly composed of women, individuals aged between 80 and 90 years, and with an educational level corresponding to primary education. The most prevalent feeling was sadness. More than 80% of the diabetic participants had xerostomia, and only 8,7% of the participants sought help to address this symptom. Speech was the most affected activity. It was found that 78% of the participants had severe xerostomia and 22% had moderate xerostomia. Conclusion: Xerostomia is a prevalent symptom that significantly affects the quality of life of elderly residents in nursing homes. The lack of oral healthcare in this population makes it essential to evaluate and raise awareness about this condition.
