The quantity of seafood imported by Portugal is very large. Although some of this seafood arrives in Portugal only to be sent to other Union countries, a considerable amount of it is part of our food chain. At the level of food quality control, the situation in Portugal is now more of the public knowledge. However, the way the animal food that arrives from countries like China, for example, is controlled, is still unknown to the consumers. This essay pretends to contribute to a more detailed knowledge of the type of control carried out regarding frozen seafood that arrives in Portugal from countries outside de European Union, and of the entity responsible for the control - the border inspection posts. A revision of seafood constitution, of dangers that might affect it and the different methods available to assess its safety was made. The operation of the border inspection posts was presented, in this case the operation post associated with the Leixões harbour, the technicians involved in the control and the methods used to guarantee the security of the seafood that arrives to this border. Finally, an introspection of the adequacy of the methods used by the border inspection posts to control frozen seafood at the Leixões harbour was made, and also about the measures to adopt in order to improve this control.
