Introduction: The composite is currently recognized as the material of choice on the day of a dental restoration, primarily for aesthetic reasons. The study of the quality of the restorations made allows the identification of potential errors in the technique and manipulation of the material which can be easily eliminated. Objective: The aim of this study was to do the description and retrospective and prospective evaluation of the clinical quality of Class II composite restorations, performed by students of Dental Medicine, at the University Clinic of Universidade Católica Portuguesa. Methods: Observational prospective study of the clinical performance of 12 Class II restorations with composite resins performed at the University Clinic of Universidade Católica Portuguesa – Centro Regional das Beiras and control at 6 months – Group 1. In parallel holds up a retrospective observational study of the clinical performance of 20 Class II restorations with composite resins made in the same University Clinic with 2 years. The clinical evaluation follows the parameters of the United States Public Health System (USPHS). Results: In group 1 there were no statistically significant differences in the parameters of the USPHS between the two time points. Almost all parameters were excellent in all restorations. The parameters evaluated were found unchanged after 6 months. In group 2, on the color reproduction, suficient value was attributed to 45.0% of restorations, the alpha value of 35% and 20% had bad evaluation. 20% of the restorations had secondary caries. Allusively discoloration margin cavosurface, 65.0% achieved a satisfactory evaluation and 30% excellent, 5.0% were unsatisfactory. In parameter contour, 70.0% of the restorations was in excellent and 30% satisfactory. Regarding integrity margin, 55.0% of the restorations were excellent, satisfactory 40.0% and 5.0% unsatisfactory. Conclusions: The restorations evaluated at 6 months were all presented with clinical success. At 2 years, the parameters with higher failure rate were the incidence of caries and color reproduction.
