Introduction: The tooth eruption is a multifactorial process which describes the axial or occlusal movement tooth since its development position within the jaws towards the occlusal plane in the functional position. The eruption of the second mandibular molars is a complex event, so it standards to the emergence of these teeth can be used by orthodontists to decide when to start or how to design orthodontic treatment. Objective: Evaluate the clinical stage of eruption of mandibular second molars and determine the age at which emerge in the oral cavity. Material and Methods: The dates of birth were asked to each participant in this study. There was intraoral observation of school children in the urban area of Viseu, aged between 10 and 15 years. Was made the evaluation of the clinical stage of eruption wherein the second mandibular molars were, if they were present in the oral cavity and check its health state, making note of all the data collected. Proceeded to the statistical analysis of all information collected. Results: We obtained mean ages of clinic emergency of the second mandibular molars of 12 years and 6 months for girls and 12 years and 1 month for boys relative to tooth 37; in relation to tooth 47 were obtained mean age of 11 years and 8 months and 12 years and 7 months for girls and boys, respectively. The bilateral comparison showed high similarities and the gender comparison revealed disparity. Only 3% of the evaluated teeth between 13 and 15 years are fully erupted. Conclusion: The results of this study with regard to age of emergence of second mandibular molars, as well as the comparison between genders and quadrants, do not deviate much from those obtained in other similar studies. However, since it was observed tiny percentage of fully erupted teeth (Stage V), no studies to corroborate these results.
