INTRODUCTION: A partial denture is one of the treatment options to consider in oral rehabilitation of edentulous spaces with the use of dental prosthesis if well planned and designed. When the design and planning of partial dentures are not appropriate to rehabilitate the case, there is an increased risk of periodontal disease and caries in the abutment teeth, as well as a decrease in tolerance and patient acceptance for the use of the prosthesis, which ultimately may lead to failure of the prosthetic rehabilitation. PURPOSE: Therefore was defined as the primary objective of this study evaluate if the use of removable partial denture has an influence on periodontal status of abutment teeth when compared with the periodontal status of non- abutment teeth. MATERIAL AND METHODS: We conducted a study of observational and cross type, developed with the base on a sample of patients rehabilitated with removable partial dentures, between the years 2010 and 2013 in the University Clinic of the Catholic University. A questionnaire and a clinical examination, that made possible the collection of data of the variables analyzed in this study, was performed: Probing depth, gingival recession, plaque index, gingival index and mobility:. The data collected were subjected to a descriptive and inferential statistical analysis (significance level of 0.05), using IBM ® SPSS Statistics v21.0. program. (Software Estatistical Package for the Social Science). RESULTS: Of the 145 patients contacted by telephone, 54 joined the follow up appointment requested, with a mean age of 59,09 ± 11,12. The most frequent partial edentulous type was Kennedy Class III in the upper arch and Kennedy Class I in the lower arch. Most of the patients used the prosthesis only during the day. It was found that the abutment teeth had higher values in all periodontal variables, being also possible verify that the occlusal clasps showed worse outcomes in relation to gingival clasps. CONCLUSION: The abutment teeth with occlusal hook have worse periodontal values when compared with the hooks of gingival approach and with the non-abutment teeth. It is essential to establish a program of follow-up in the area of periodontology and removable prosthesis after placement of the prosthesis, to maintain periodontal health of the supporting tissues.
