Abstract

Among the causes of death considered to be sensitive to primary prevention were identified in Portugal the cardiovascular disease. The aim of this study is to analyze the influence of a structured nursing education program in health literacy, style and quality of life, adherence to therapy, the therapeutic self-care ability and clinical data of people with high blood pressure, main cause of cardiovascular diseases. This is a longitudinal study, quantitative, experimental, level IV, with a design "before-after" with witness group. The subjects were randomly assigned to groups, and the experimental group was followed for 6 months, with a monthly nursing consultation. There were two evaluations in each group: before the education program and at the end. We resorted to various data collection tools: questionnaire of sociodemographic characterization, Mini Quality of Life Questionnaire in Hypertension, Fantastic Lifestyle, Measure Treatment Adherence, Self-Care Instrument Therapeutic, Batalla- Martinez Test and set true / false questions. The sample consists of 27 subjects: 14 in the experimental group and 13 in the control group. The results show that this program has contributed to the reduction in body mass index and waist circumference, improved lifestyle, the adherence to drug therapy, the therapeutic self-care ability and literacy about their clinical situation in general. There were statistically significant differences between groups in total cholesterol levels and physical activity/associations domain of the Fantastic Lifestyle Questionnaire. In the experimental group there were differences in the Self Care Therapeutic Index, the average systolic and diastolic blood pressure, influencing their control and waist circumference. Taking into account the results we are convinced that the autonomous intervention of Nursing in the prevention and control of cardiovascular risk factors in queries is an asset to obtain health gains.
