Abstract

Mental illness accounts for a mental or behavioral disorder often people with mental illness are excluded from health promotion activities, and often when these people are hospitalized neglect their oral hygiene, or in some cases of disability, the health professionals cannot guarantee this kind of hygiene. The development of the theme lies in assessing the level of oral health care provided by health professionals to patients admitted to the Psychiatric Hospital of Viseu. In order to meet the goals set, we applied a questionnaire to 36 health professionals from the Psychiatric Hospital of Viseu (nurses and medical auxiliaries) in the period between April and May 2012. This consisted of 23 issues mostly response closed and open answer a few questions. As a result of inferential statistical analysis confirmed the existence of statistically significant relationship between the age variable and all variables analyzed, while the variables gender and profession only had a statistically significant relationship with some of the variables. We conclude that the level of knowledge of the professionals involved in this study was low in relation to methods of plaque control and aspects to consider during the observation of the oral cavity; health professionals not admit the jurisdiction of the prosthesis hygiene and do not know how this should be done and they are unaware of medications that cause dry mouth as a risk factor, as well as the association of these drugs with the emergence of oral diseases.
