Abstract

This Internship Report describes the activities developed during the internship within the scope of the Master's Dissertation curricular unit, included in the 2nd year of the Master's Degree in Biotechnology and Innovation, by the Escola Superior de Biotecnologia, from Universidade Católica Portuguesa. The internship was carried out at the Health Service of the Autonomous Region of Madeira, where I had the opportunity to integrate the team of dieticians of the Nutrition and Dietetics Unit, the Paediatrics Service of Dr. Nélio Mendonça hospital, and the Youth Care Service at Bom Jesus health centre. The internship began on October 3 from 2022 and ended on March 31 from 2023. It was supervised by Dr.ª Carla Gonçalves, dietician at the Paediatrics Service of Hospital Dr. Nélio Mendonça and co-supervised by Professor Elisabete Pinto, professor at the Escola Superior de Biotecnologia, from Universidade Católica Portuguesa. Throughout the internship, I followed the work of the dieticians of the various services, carried out external and internal nutrition consultations, developed food education materials, participated in the resolution of case studies, analysed some of the scientific bibliography to support nutritional intervention and developed a research work. In addition, I attended some scientific events and complementary training, which allowed me to constantly update my knowledge. The general and specific objectives initially defined were achieved during the internship. I had the opportunity to get to know the reality of the dieticians who works daily to the best quality of life and health of children and youth, and also combine the knowledge acquired in the undergraduate programme and throughout the master's degree and transform it into learning moments for my future professional practice. The internship was a differentiating and enriching experience, contributing to my professional and personal growth.
