This Report is the result of an educational requirement for the Medical-Surgical Specialization field within the Master Degree in Nursing. It portrays the path along the probationary period and focuses on the specialist-nurse’s learning process and skill development of ethical, legal and professional responsibilities. The probationary period, divided into three modules, took place between April 28th and December 19th of the year 2014, in the Emergency Room, Intensive Care Unit, and Chronic Pain Unit in three different hospitals within Lisbon’s metropolitan area. In the training modules’ early stage, in accordance with the syllabus’ provisions, a Project was conducted with objectives, activities plan and skills to be developed, performing along the way the analysis, description and reflection on the activities developed, difficulties and coping strategies related to learning moments, and experiences in clinical practice. The path was ruled by providing specialized nursing care to patients and their families, valuing the continuous improvement of quality and safety. The subject of pain and the importance of its assessment and management were transversal to all three modules. Module I was conducted in the Emergency Room (ER), where expertise were developed in providing specialized care to the person in urgent and / or emergent critical situation and his family. The main developed subjects were: pain assessment and management, and health care-associated infections, raising the awareness of professionals to existing policies and recommendations associated with Isolation guidelines, by conducting a training session. Module II was carried out in an Intensive Care Unit (ICU), where it was possible to develop expertise directed towards providing specialized care to critical patients undergoing mechanical ventilation, and their family, with the opportunity to collaborate on a campaign for ventilator-associated pneumonia prevention, developing operational guidelines and a poster. Expertise in critical patients’ pain assessment and management were also acquired, while conducting training sessions to raise the awareness of the multidisciplinary team to the noise impact on the ICU and the environment’s influence in the comfort and life quality of the patient. Module III was held in Chronic Pain Management Unit (CPMU). The development of skills was conducted through the provision of specialized care to people in chronic pain and their families, focusing on the phenomenon of musculoskeletal and cancer pain. In this Module, breakthrough pain sensitization of the multidisciplinary team, the patient and the patient’s family was also a main subject. Patient and family were sensitized with guideline posters about the topic, and a debate on this theme was promoted within the multidisciplinary team. The report, as the final step the probationary path, aims to promote evidence-based practice as a process of professional, personal and scientific value, increasing intervention capabilities both responsible and of quality in the different care contexts, thus fitting the skills development process in the Medical-Surgical Nursing specialization field.
