Banking on plastic for the environment

: a case on how to finance Plastic Bank, save the oceans from the plastic soup and alleviate poverty in coastal areas

Abstract

Plastic Bank is an innovative for-profit impact company that reduces plastic waste and helps the poor. The company uses blockchain technology and impact tokens to monetize plastic waste and establishes a sustainable closed loop supply chain of Social Plastic® for businesses and customers.This teaching case study will allow students to understand the power of blockchain technologies in impact companies and funding opportunities for these impact companies who are seeking to reach financial sustainability and explore new growth opportunities. It does so by illustrating the case of Plastic Bank providing an in-depth analysis of the business model and different financing vehicles.
