Abstract

After several decades of research, the researchers established the concept of well-being in the scientific field of positive psychology redirecting the focus of psychology interest to the study of positive emotions, virtues and personal strengths. However, well-being has been considered an integral part of the concept of quality of life - before being considered an integral construct the study of positive psychology- which is divided into two components - objective and subjective - and in two perspectives – subjective well-being and psychological well-being - each one based on different philosophical traditions - hedonism and eudaimonismo, respectively. Thanks to the evolution of the organizational environment and labor relations, combined with the recognition of the importance and contribution of employees to the actual scope of organizational success within companies, the study of well-being has been transposed into the organizational context. Indeed, the well-being at work (WBW), with theoretical bases on subjective well-being (SWB) and psychological well-being (PWB), it is considered to be a multidimensional psychological concept integrated by positive emotional bonds with work (satisfaction and commitment) and with the organization (affective organizational commitment). This dissertation analyses the well-being at work in two institutions with different economic natures – profit and military - by applying a closed-response survey based on three validated rating scales (job satisfaction scale organizational, affective commitment with work scale and involvement with work scale ) and based on WBW indicators described in the literature revision. The questionnaire was distributed to all employees of the ABC legal - Sociedade de Advogados, RL (23 employees) and to all Base Nº1 of the Portuguese Air Force (340 employees). The response rate was 78.3% and 8.2%, respectively. The institution that had higher levels of WBW was ABC legal - Sociedade de Advogados, RL, the profit-oriented one.
