Abstract

Subjective well-being evaluates the satisfaction and happiness of individuals, considering both emotional states and the global assessment of life. Although widely studied in the general population, there is a gap in investigating this concept in people with intellectual disability. Intellectual disability is characterized by limitations on cognitive functioning, problem solving and social skills, which can influence the perception of well-being. This study aims to evaluate subjective well-being in people with light intellectual disability. A qualitative methodology was adopted, using 8 Focus Group, involving 29 participants. Data analysis followed the semantic content analysis method. The results related to “self - perceptions of attributes and characteristics” showed that these individuals have a positive self -image, referring personal qualities such as sympathy and affection. With regard to the “representations of the elements associated with welfare”, interaction with nature, housing and living with animals as essential for welfare were highlighted. Regarding the “relevance of bonds and connections with significant people”, participants stressed the importance of relationships with family and friends. As for “ambitions and desires to achieve well-being”, they showed the desire to have a profession and to have more social contact. These results reinforce the importance of social participation and a stimulating environment to promote subjective well-being in this population, corroborating the literature that highlights the need for greater inclusion in socially significant activities.
