Abstract

Technological advancements have significantly increased data availability, encouraging companies to actively seek strategies for extracting value from it, however, many face challenges in implementing BDA. This study aims to analyze the factors influencing BDA adoption within Portuguese retail companies, focusing on its benefits, challenges, and the influence of organizational culture. Although the literature explores the advantages and challenges of BDA adoption, it does not focus on the aspects mentioned above. Therefore, the study aims to contribute with a summary table that recognizes barriers, interventions, and outcomes of BDA implementation in Portuguese retail, emphasizing the need to overcome the obstacles and providing insights for addressing these challenges. Employing a qualitative approach, the research analyzes multiple case studies involving four Portuguese retail companies. Data collection is achieved through semi-structured interviews, providing a comprehensive perspective. The key findings highlight the importance of predictive analysis and the growing adoption of BI tools. Additionally, organizational culture emerges as a driver for the effective implementation of BDA. Furthermore, the study reveals the perceived benefits by Portuguese retailers, which include improvements in decision-making processes and business agility. Moreover, challenges were also identified, such as resistance to change and the inherent complexity of tools. The proposed strategies to overcome these challenges encompass training initiatives and the establishment of specialized departments in data transformation.
