Abstract

Knowledge update is crucial in the nursing profession since it leads to the development and improvement of skills. This report, which shall be submitted to the Institute of Health Sciences of Universidade Católica Portuguesa, aims to account for the progress made during the Master’s degree in Medical Surgical Nursing – Person in Critical Condition, between September 2019 and February 2021. The purpose of this degree is to develop the scientific, technical, ethical, and interpersonal competencies of a medical surgical nurse with regard to critical patients in Emergency and Intensive Care. In order to accomplish this, the Master’s degree not only includes theoretical curricular units, but also practical units, which took place in the emergency service and the intensive care unit of a hospital after the completion of said theoretical units. Conceptually, the driving force behind this academic journey and report was the phenomena of adherence of health care professionals to good clinical practice. Based on a previous personal interest in this area, the professional practice and experience in the clinical training context prompted a desire to further examine the topic of good clinical practice, with a special focus on the factors that influence professionals’ compliance with these practices. This led to a literature review, as well as to the candidate’s improvement of quality of nursing care through peer awareness of the importance of adherence to good clinical practice. The theoretical framework is based on Patricia Benner’s philosophy of nursingpractice. This report results from the combination of concepts, theory and experience from internships, and is the culmination of a journey that provided a new perspective on professional development, as well as new competencies, aptitudes and skills.
