Abstract

The burnout syndrome is characterized as being a state of physical, emotional and mental effort, caused by a long period of exposure to emotionally demanding situations. This research aimed to investigate, in a sample (n=64) of manufacturing operators working in a Portuguese SME (Small and Medium Enterprise) in the industrial sector – a sector for which there are no significant studies on the impact of burnout – the presence of symptoms of this syndrome and to look for evidence of a significant link between burnout and socio-demographic and labor variables, as well as with perceptions of Human Research Management (HRM) policies. A self-fulfilled questionnaire was administered to the sample, divided into three parts: socio-demographic and labor data, adaptation to the Portuguese population of the Copenhagen Burnout Inventory and, lastly, a questionnaire concerning the perception of the HRM policies. This research concluded that the company’s manufacturing operators show moderate signs of burnout. It also found a negative association between burnout and the perception of HRM policies. On the other hand, not all the results of this study are consistent with those found for the health care professions. The study found no differences in burnout according to the sociodemographic variables weekly working hours and overtime. However, it demonstrated an association between burnout and all the other labor variables examined. These conclusions show the importance of designing consistent HR strategies tailored to employees in order to minimize the impact of burnout symptoms.
