Abstract

This study aims to analyze the effects of burnout in medical students in the European Union. In this work, a qualitative meta-analysis was conducted to answer the research question "How does burnout affect medical students?". Content analysis of articles that make up the sample and that were carefully selected through the EBSCO Discovery Service database was performed, filtering the articles only published between 2017 and 2022, from which 28 articles that constitute the sample were extracted. Regarding the results, through the analysis of the articles selected for the qualitative meta-analysis, it was not possible to reach a consensual answer regarding the level of prevalence of burnout in medical students, despite being considered high. The causes and consequences of burnout were also identified, highlighting the need to create appropriate strategies for the prevention and treatment of burnout by universities. At the European level, the findings pointed to the negative effects of burnout on the health and well-being of medical students, with future repercussions for doctors. Through this study it was possible to have a broad view of this syndrome and evidence the importance of developing prevention methods at the individual, organizational and occupational levels.
