Abstract

Background: The pandemic due to COVID-19 triggered an immense psychological burden to nurses due to a combination of stress factors in the workplace and personal fears. Health should be a priority and mental health prevention and intervention strategies should be promoted to improve the health, productivity and efficiency of these professionals, with direct consequences on patient care. Objectives: To evaluate the level of burnout in nurses practicing in the public and private sectors, in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic; to identify the sociodemographic and professional variables that are associated with burnout in nurses practicing in the public and private sectors, in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods: Quantitative, descriptive, cross-sectional and correlational research, carried out against a non-probabilistic convenience sample, consisting of 308 members of the Portuguese Nurses Order in active professional practice, primarily female (93.5%), with an average age of 40.13±9.77 years. For this, the Copenhagen Burnout Inventory – PT (CBI - PT) questionnaire was used, available for data collection through the Google Forms platform. Results: It was found that there is a high level of personal burnout and burnout at work in both the public and private sectors. The level of burnout is higher among respondents from the public sector in the 3 dimensions. Age proved to be the sociodemographic variable with statistically significant relevance to the level of burnout. Of the professional variables that have a statistically significant relevance with the level of burnout were the function performed, the sector, the time of exercise of the profession and the specialization. dimensions of burnout. A higher level of burnout was obtained in participants with 36-40 years of experience in the three dimensions of burnout; a higher level of burnout among nurses in the Mental Health and Psychiatric specialty in the dimensions of work burnout and client-related burnout. Nurses working in the area of Maternal and Obstetric Health have a higher level of burnout in the personal burnout dimension.
