Abstract

Aim: Identify the clinical characteristics associated with the development of eating disorders in males Method: A systematic literature review was conducted in accordance with the guidelines of the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA; Moher et al., 2009; cf., http://www.prisma-statement.org/). To this end, a research question was operationalized, according to the methodology Participants, Interventions, Comparisons, Outcomes, Study design (PICOS; Donato & Donato, 2019; Moher et al., 2009), what are the clinical characteristics associated with the development of eating disorders in males? The bibliographic research process considered articles from peer-reviewed journals. The following databases were considered: PubMed, PsycINFO and SCOPUS. Results: Only four studies were considered, totaling 1270 participants, with the sample size varying between 99 and 630. The main results of this review show that men and women diagnosed with an eating disorder have several similarities to each other. However, all studies pointed to the existence of specificities related to gender.
