Abstract

Introduction: Forensically, several dental morphological traits have been described as useful for the determination of an unknown individual identity. In order for dental traits to be of use in forensic identification they must be as specific to a population as possible. In this study we will review about two dental morphological variants designed as the tubercle of Carabelli and Talon cusp. The tubercle of Carabelli is a dental morphologic trait found on the maxillary deciduous second molar and maxillary permanent first molar crowns. In the other hand the talon cusp was described as an anomalous hyperplasia of the cingulum of maxilar or mandibular permanent incisors, leading to a formation of a supernumerary cusp. Therefore, the talon cups can be defined as an uncommon dental anomaly manifesting as an accessory cusp-like structure. Due to several anthropological and evolutionary applications of these traits, and to its variability, it is still a subject of interest in the anthropological literature. Objective: The aim of this study is to evaluate in a descriptive analysis, the distribution of the tubercle of Carabelli and the Talon Cusp, and calculate its prevalence in a population of students attending dentistry course in Catholic University of Portugal, in Portugal and in Radboud University Nijmegen in the Nederlands (Aged 18 – 23 years old). Materials and methods: An intra-oral examination of the anterior teeth, and the maxilary permanent first molar will be made to determinate the existence of the talon cusps and the tubercle of Carabelli. The existence of talon cusps were recorded and classified according to Hattab classification, and the carabelli tuberculum by the Dahlberg classification. Statistical tests will be carried out using Statistical Package for Social Sciences® (SPSS – Windows version 21.0) and the Excel Microsoft 2010®. Results: The results showed no statistical difference between the two studied samples. Conclusion: In order to achieve better and more detailed results it is necessary to enlarge the population sample and study different regions.
