Abstract
Bullying is very frequent in Portuguese schools. The annual Portuguese Association ofvictim support (APAV) report reveals that 116 crimes of bullying have been registered
in Portugal in 2016. Therefore, it is important to prevent it, and it is crucial to deeply
investigate it. This study intends to analyze if the phenomenon of bullying manifests
itself differently in public or private schools, in middle school students. It is intended to
analyze if bullying varies considering the following variables: gender, age, schooling,
self-esteem, number of friends and place of occurrence. The sample is constituted by
248 Middle School students from two schools (a public school and a private school).
Three instruments have been used: a socio- demographic questionnaire, the
Questionnaire for the study of violence among pairs in elementary school (Freire, Simão
& Ferreira, 2005) and Rosenberg´s Self Esteem Scale (Santos Maia, 2003).. Differences
between public and private schools haven´t been found in what refers to the occurrence
of victimization and the types of bullying. Furthermore, it has been concluded that
bullying doesn´t vary according to gender, age, schooling, self esteem and the number
of friends. There is a tendency for the decrease of victimization with increasing age, for
the increase of friends while the aggression increases and for the decrease of self esteem
while victimization increases. Finally, it should be noted that it is the playground where
more bullying cases occur.
