Abstract

Prematurity is an issue that has led to several investigations, especially by its impact on child development. Furthermore, it is often associated with cognitive, academic and behavioral difficulties. In this sense, it appears to be a risk factor for development and learning, presenting a risk for the transition and school adjustment. The aims of the present study are to characterize the school adjustment of children born prematurely through the Questionário de Avaliação da Adaptação à Escola and to correlate these results with other data of clinical, developmental and family history of children. Specifically, these data include: gestational age, birth weight, results of the developmental profile obtained by the Escala de Desenvolvimento Mental de Griffiths at five years old, and also parents education level and occupation. Data collection was obtained from teachers of 11 children born prematurely and who started compulsory schooling in the academic year 2011/2012. The instruments used were the Clinical and Socio-demographic Register of the child and the Questionário de Avaliação da Adaptação à Escola, validated and adapted to the Portuguese population by Pinto and Morgado in 1998 (Morgado, 1998). The main results reveal that children present in the sample have higher mean values on the behavior and social integration, and lower mean values in relation to fine motor skills and basic requirements. It is verified that the scale of the Escala de Desenvolvimento Mental de Griffiths has a prognostic value in terms of language skills. There were no statistically significant differences between the results of the Questionário de Avaliação da Adaptação à Escola and clinical (gestational age and birth weight) and socio-demographic (parents education level and occupation) data. At the end of the present study, its implications and limitations are discussed and some suggestions are made for future research.
