Abstract

Introduction: Resin composite is the most used direct restorative material in dentistry in addition to being also frequently demanded by patients due to esthetic reasons. However, despite the great evolution and major improvements already achieved in relation to the material’s properties, there remain important limitations which can lead to failure of restoration, one of these being the possibility of postoperative sensitivity which can occur approximately one week after restorative treatment. Postoperative sensitivity can be caused by several reasons one an improper manipulation of restorative materials. Purpose: This study evaluates postoperative sensitivity of posterior class II composite resin restorations. The study pretends to quantify the degree of postoperative sensitivity, evaluate the stimulus and determine the risk factors of sensitivity. Methods: The examination will be conducted on vital molars and premolars requiring restorative treatment. After cavity preparations the examined teeth were restored with a resin-based material. Sensitivity was evaluated at 48 hours, 7 and 14 days and recorded using a visual analogue scale. The data was analyzed statistically using IBM SPSS statistics v.20 (Statistical Package for the Social Sciences) with Phi e Cramer’s V tests. Results: 16.7% of the sample showed postoperative sensitivity. Statistically significant differences were found between postoperative sensitivity and cavity extension (Cramer’s V com 0,452, p= 0.04). Amongst the different stimuli, cold was the most prevalent. Conclusion: It is possible to observe a positive association between occurrence of postoperative sensitivity and the extension of the cavity. An evaluation of the frequency of this phenomenon is important in attempting to assess the quality of performed restorations which is why it is necessary to conduct further studies with a higher amount of representative samples.
