Abstract

Email communication is the main form of internal communication of organizations, being characterized by the lack of nonverbal clues that grim the identification of the interlocutor’s emotions. Through a sample of 71 individuals, this study aims to portray the use of emojis and emoticons in professional interactions, evaluating dimensions as familiarity, arousal, meaningfulness, utilization frequency, perception of suitability, reasons subjacent to its employment and if such utilization has changed due to the COVID19 pandemic. As such, the method applied in this study consisted in a questionnaire through which data was collected and processed via IBM SPSS Statistics (version 26). The results showed that the COVID19 pandemic resulted in a more frequent use of emojis and emoticons (although a more prevalent use of emojis), complemented with a bigger variety of reasons subjacent to its utilization. Equally concludable from the results was the fact that type of communication (formal or informal), as well as age, are dimensions that must be considered when considering the usage of emojis and emoticons.
