Abstract

In this study on food waste, an attempt was made to discover the status of preventing and combating waste in the Portuguese supply chain. The interest and importance of this topic have increased over the years, with a lot of literature being developed. The study was carried out through semi-structured interviews with managers of companies in the agri-food sector involved in the supply chain, from different stages of it. Thus, a more complete and qualitative study was allowed, without the limitations of closed questionnaires. Several useful conclusions were reached for solving the problem of food waste. Through the data obtained, analyzes were carried out that allow the study of the relationships that different parameters have between them, such as the type of company, causes of waste and measures to prevent and combat waste. This study revealed that food waste is around 2% of sales in the Portuguese agri-food industry, as well as it identified that the expiration date is the main cause of waste, and that initiatives against waste are the main measure used by companies in the sector to minimize food waste.
