Introduction – Edentulism affects in particular older people. Oral rehabilitation with complete removable prosthodontics will increase in the future and it is a viable treatment option for oral rehabilitation of edentulous dental arches. Consequently is very important to categorize this patients using a standard classification. Objectives – The aim of this study is to classify a sample of complete bimaxillary edentulous patients rehabilitated at Universidade Católica Portuguesa’s university clinic by undergraduate students, using the prosthodontics diagnostic index (PDI) for edentulous – developed by the American College of Prosthodontics – to identify the complexity of the cases rehabilitated by the students. Materials and Methods – The survey was conducted on 21 patients rehabilitated with complete bimaxillary denture that were observed and categorized in four distinctive classes (class I - class IV) according to the prosthodontics diagnostic index (PDI). Personal data, prosthetic history, satisfaction with the complete dentures and the use of denture adhesive were registed in the clinical file. In addition it was evaluated the masticatory capability, according the method of Sato et al. and evaluated the retention and stability, according to the method of Kapur. Results – The average age of the patients was 66,62 ± 12,31 years, and 71,5% of the them were geriatric, with an average time of edentulism in the maxilla of 12,05 ± 11,76 years and 7,63 ± 9,31 years in the mandible. The majority of patients where categorized as class IV (52,4%) and the remaining: 4,8% as class I, 14,3% as class II, 28,6% as class III. We obtained a statistically significant relationship between the PDI and clinical state (retention and stability) of the complete denture; mandibular residual ridge height and the time of edentulism; mandibular residual ridge height and the clinical state of the complete denture. In addition we establish a relationship between the masticatory capability and the satisfaction of the patient, in the use of superior or inferior dentures. It was observed a high use of dental adhesives. Conclusion: The PDI use it’s an advantage when used at dentistry colleges in order to have a standard diagnose evaluation and therefore have a better treatment plan. In this study we conclude, for example, the existence of a statistical relationship between PDI and rehabilitation’s clinical evaluation. However we have also verified that there is a relevant degree of subjectivity in the application of some diagnostic criteria. As the majority of the cases studied at the university clinic are IV Class it’s recommended the adoption of teaching strategies dedicated to rehabilitation of more complex cases.
