Abstract

The work developed during the traineeship in the Environmental department of the Sociedade de Prestação de Serviços de Engenharia Civil, S.A. have the purpose to study two waste streams: municipal solid waste in removal solid waste projects and construction and demolition waste in construction stage of schools. The first phase of traineeship was focus mostly on the development of the previous study phase in removal solid waste projects of Parque Escolar (Secondary Schools of Gondomar, Clara de Resende, Estarreja and Mirandela) and UPTEC building. According to the law, in the construction of the public building it is necessary to build a waste compartment to serve as temporary storage for the generated waste. For its dimensioning, is essential to do a production waste characterization and quantification, in order, to decide the best deposition equipment. The type waste produced in these projects is Municipal Solid Waste, more precisely, the paper / cardboard, plastics / packaging, glass, organic and non characterized waste. In the second phase was carried out a monitoring of the construction and demolition waste in construction stage of secondary schools (Carlos Amarante, Monserrate and Caldas das Taipas) by checking all the documentation of the entity performing (verification of waste transport guides and respective waste reception certificates, licenses of waste management entities and their validity) and the realization of monitoring visits at the jobsite. Through this monitoring was possible to identify and quantify the construction and demolition waste produced. The type wastes of these contracts are: wood, materials containing asbestos, non recyclable plastic waste, paper / cardboard, isolation materials and soils. In order to overcome the difficulties, in these two sectors were given some proposals for future work to increase the efficiency of municipal solid waste and construction and demolition waste management in Portugal.
