Abstract
This dissertation is the study of a very old building. It is the result of an alteration and extension project on some "houses", known as Stables of Chateau Ribeiro da Cunha, with the adoption of innovative materials, reinforced concrete, becoming a pioneer case of that time. The use of a mixed solution, reinforced concrete on the slabs and beans, and masonry stone on supporting walls portrays an innovation of the late nineteenth century, the use of reinforced concrete as a structural element. A typical combination of solution on the walls masonry units with the introduction of a reinforced concrete cover is the beginning of the change of the constructive method and a new type of construction phase in Portugal.
It is analyzed the location, that although privileged, in the center of Lisbon, poses problems due to the topography of the land, the risk due to seismic events and the sliding mass strand.
The study of this case is intended to contribute to the understanding of the structural problems that earlier buildings, before anti seismic regulations and without detailing can provide. It is made a structural analysis of reinforced concrete as a structural element in its early stage. Considerations about the new Eurocodes are pointed.
Finally after the structure analysis the intervention phase. The demands on strengthening, recovery and rehabilitation of the building structure, taking into account the results obtained in structural analysis, focusing on the gravitational analysis, analysis of foundations and seismic analysis.
